Yes "Potatoes could be the next electrical energy that could light up the world"-you heard it right. This is exactly whats the future demands after rising increase of the electricity in the whole world and still 1.2 billion people lives in the darkness facing the scarcity of electricity. The ideas have been proposed from researcher rabinowitch and colleagues from the university of Hebrew,Jerusalem. The research team from year 2010 is trying to implement potato power to develop electricity to light the bulbs,LED's and run various other electrical appliances.
How the idea works?
This may be the most basic ideas of science that you may have already learned in your high-school.We all know that in order to make a battery from a organic material we will probably need two metals out of which one should be anode which is the negative electrode(metals like zinc) and another one is cathode which will act as a positive electrode(metals like copper),now the acid inside the potato will react with the two metals thus forming a "electron in flow" equation which will in turn release the energy.Actually this idea was first discovered in the 17th century when Galvani in 1780 attached two metals between the legs of a frog and for his surprise the leg muscle twitched letting him discover that metals will react and release energy if come in contact with a organic juice or acid.
Potatoes can be made more potentially compatible to produce more energy. The process is damn easy right. There is a smart and ingenious trick to make the potato release more energy so much that it can light up a bulb for as long as 40 days. The research team first looked at 20 different type of potatoes and measured their internal resistance and understand how much energy can be loss by heat.So what they did is that they boiled the potato for about 8 minutes which helped to broke down the organic tissues inside the potato and reduce the resistance and allows more free movements of the electrons thus producing more power. The research team told that the process is important because the cost of energy falls down thus its is economically sustainable. They analysed that a boiled potato can light a bulb at $9-per kilo-watt hour while a typical 1.5V AA-alkaline battery produces energy at the rate of $49-$55-per kilo-watt hour which is vast difference and can change the revolution of electricity.
But why "Potato Power" is not as famous as it should be?
The process being easy yet didn't the mark its presence in the world.when the question was asked to the research team they simply said that the most important reason for this is that most of the people are unaware of this fact that potato can be used as battery, the second most important factor comes when a food will be replaced as a source of energy where the united nation of food and agriculture would interfere as they did when sugarcane was being used as source of bio-fuel.And the third point could be the importance of potato in some continents like Asia and Africa where people's main food is mostly potato so telling them itself is a huge and difficult task. But though the difficulty is immense the research team said "we are improving slowly to spread our ideas and we hope that one day we will be able to spread it among the whole world for the betterment of it only"
Guys i think its a great idea as survey says every year more than a 10-20% potatoes go to the thrash because of poor harvesting or poor market conditions or even poor storage conditions. So we can easy use this waste potatoes as a source of electricity to save our world from the scarcity of the electrical energy.New ideas always ends in a good places and i hope one day this idea will aswell.
